I am sure you have heard or probably have used the Global Positioning System known simply as GPS, right? Well in case you havent it is a system of satellites and receivers with a precise-positioning and navigation tool to help you pinpoint where you are and where you need to go? The Department of Defense first designed the system to accurately determine the locations of soldiers, military vehicles, planes and ships world-wide. Today, it has extended into the commercial and scientific worlds. Commercially, GPS is used as a navigation and positioning tool in airplanes, boats, cars, and for almost all outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and kayaking. Scientifically, GPS plays an important role in the earth sciences. Meteorologists use it for weather forecasting and global climate studies; and geologists can use it as a highly accurate method of surveying and in earthquake studies to measure tectonic motions during and in between earthquakes.

My question is how accurate is it? As for me, I became totally confused when I had to use it on a recent trip to Iowa. The car I rented came with a GPS unit and the clerk obviously assumed that I knew how to use it. It was a total nightmare for me. I was in a strange land-I had no idea how to get around town…at all! And of course being the organized person that I am MapQuest my entire trip, so there wouldnt be any problems to and from my destination…well guess what? I was wrong. My confusion started at the MLI Airport when I ask the clerk where the Country Inn Suite was located, and he said type the address in your GPS and it will take you right to your location, so having some digital literacy I did, got lost and travelled 40 miles past my destination.

I made a couple stops to ask for directions, which only led to more confusion and dead ends, so what did I do? I pulled over to the side and did the only thing I knew to do…I cried! I forgot that my daughter was with me, until she advised me to pray and ask God for His help…why didnt I think of that? As we prayed for help I began feeling better and more confident that God would lead the way, and yes, He did! I followed my GPS (Gods Presence Sovereignty) and with guidance from His precision navigational named the Holy Spirit I located the Country Inn Suites and checked in.

What I learned that night is when we travel to fast in life we lose our focus, and our sense of directions, causing stumbling blocks and obstacles to get in our way. I had MapQuest and a GPS unit and still got lost…why? I failed to ask questions about my directions for clarity to reach my destination while at the airport; instead I relied on my own recognizance that resulted in pure frustration. Getting dressed during your time away from home on a business or pleasure trip can be a favorable and calming experience if you plan your packing. On the other hand, it can be very distressing to bring your most professional outfit only to realize at the last moment that you forgot to pack the matching blouse, accessories or the right color hose. A successful trip begins before you leave home since packing takes some thought. To make sure you dont have any unexpected surprises its better begin packing a day or two before you leave – maybe something you will want to wear needs cleaning or you might need to buy another clothing item.
1. Stick to a basic color group for your pants, skirt and jacket. Add a blouse (with a collar) for a professional look. Include 2 pairs of shoes of the same color with different height heels, keeping in mind what you will be doing. For instance, if you will be doing a lot of walking bring comfortable walking shoes that look great with your suit.
2. Always take a carry on bag with a change of clothes and all your toiletries in case your luggage gets lost or delayed. Youll want to be ready for that important meeting.
3. Always take a dressy black dinner dress or a glitzy blouse or top, that can be worn with a skirt, for last minute invitations. Dont forget matching shoes.
4. Make a list of your appointments to decide what you will need to wear. Will it be strictly business our will you be engaging in more casual situations. Will you need gym or swim clothes?
5. Consider fabric. Choose clothes that are less likely to wrinkle and for those that will wrinkle, bring a small iron or steamer. Even though the hotel supplies irons you dont want to call housekeeping and be kept waiting when you only have a few minutes to spare.
Your professional image shouldnt take a vacation while you are en route. With this in mind, wear professional attire while traveling but not necessarily something that you plan to wear while doing business unless you are going directly to a business appointment when you arrive. Although it is important to look your best, wearing your best suit for several hours while traveling can give it a distressed look. Choose a professional suit but one that you wont need to wear to business meetings on that trip.
